Genetic predisposition to asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lungs. During an asthma attack the lungs react extremely sensitively to stimuli such as pollen, pets, house dust mites, smoke, exertion or stress. This causes the mucous membranes in the nose, throat and lungs to swell and produce more mucus and fluid than normal. The muscles around the airways contract, resulting in shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. More women than men suffer from asthma.

Asthma and heredity

It is not yet known exactly what causes asthma, but the likelihood of contracting this condition is determined in part by hereditary factors. To date it has been scientifically proven that a number of genes play a role in this. On the basis of your DNA it is therefore possible to tell whether you have an increased or reduced risk of contracting asthma.

Preventing asthma

At present little is known about how you can help to prevent asthma yourself. That is why your iGene Passport currently contains no information about this complaint.
